What is the best material to use for shower walls?

It is not common knowledge to know all the different materials that can be used for your shower, but we like to make it pretty common knowledge of what we think is best. Before we push our (well-backed) opinion onto you, we will give you the options.

1. Glass Tile

Glass tiles are exactly what they sound like, they are translucent tiles that give an extra shine to your bathroom. They come in small tiles that when added together in a pattern will create the base for your wall.

Pros: Beautiful, shiny, unique

Cons: Expensive, brittle and very easily damaged.

2. Stone Tile

Stone tile is tiling that looks like a natural marbling. It is similar to granite in appearance. They are also are installed one-by-one in your wall.

Pros: Strong, natural-texture

Cons: Expensive, easily stained, hard to clean

3. Ceramic

Ceramic tiles tend to be a bit larger than glass or stone tiles, making your shower wall look a little different than traditional tile. Ceramic is similar to porcelain, so the same material that a toilet is made out of, it is a very classic shower look. \

Pros: Inexpensive, less resistant to stain and leaking issues

Cons: Out of style, complex installation

4. Acrylic

Acrylic material is cut in one large piece to fit your shower wall per corner. Acrylic is a sheet installation process for shower walls, not tiles. It creates a glossy finish with many different prints.

Pros: slip-resistant, mold-resistant, a variety of colors AND textures, inexpensive, easy to install

Con: You may feel like the rest of your home needs to be updated after this!

In case you missed it, our favorite is indeed acrylic. Acrylic is the best system to use for shower walls because it is the safest, least high maintenance, and easy to install, meaning your shower could be done in as little as two days. Acrylic is one of the most durable materials used in the shower construction industry, and for good reason. It is guaranteed not to chip, peel, crack or fade over time, and it is highly resistant to mildew or mold.

Herl’s prefers using acrylic material for our showers because we think it is definitely the best for you, your home and your wallet. We offer different styles and textures that can make your shower look like any other material. In addition, our showers can be made with customizable, ADA-compliant safety features such as low or no barrier entry, built-in seating options and grab bars. Most importantly, our acrylic shower inserts come with a lifetime warranty.
